The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by remembering one of the premier special teams player in Tennessee State football history.

In 1981, Herman Hunter first stepped foot onto TSU’s campus. Like any other young player, Hunter was delegated a role on the Tigers’ special teams. Hunter was fast and elusive, so Coach John Merritt let him return kicks.

Hunter seized the opportunity and by the time he left TSU in 1984, he had become the school’s all-time leader in kick return yardage.

In fact, Hunter’s 2,285 yards on kickoffs alone still stands as a Tennessee State record to this day. He is currently ahead of second placeholder, Carlos Wright by nearly 700 yards.

During Hunter’s sophomore season, Hunter broke TSU’s record for most all-purpose yards during a game with 453 yards against Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 13, 1982. He also set the mark for most kickoff return yardage with 262, helping the Tigers whip the Devils, 63-41.

Hunter also played a big role in TSU’s Black College National Championship in 1982- the team’s second in as many seasons.

A year later, Hunter, along with Golden Tate, led TSU in scoring. Hunter totaled 13 touchdowns on the season for 78 points.

Also in 1983, Hunter rushed for 104 yards in the memorable 7-7 tie versus Grambling in what would be Merritt’s final season.

Hunter was an All-American during his senior season and was later drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the eleventh round of the NFL Draft.

Hunter played in the NFL for three different teams in three seasons. He totaled nearly 1,000 total yards for his career and had three touchdowns.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
