Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University men's golf team will head to Atlanta, Ga. to compete in this weekend's National Black College Invitational hosted by the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc. The tournament will be held at the Browns Mill Golf Course in Atlanta.
The Tigers are returning to the 18-hole, par-72 course as the defending champions. In last year's tournament, TSU shot an 8-under par with a team total of 280 in the first round. The men were 15 strokes ahead in the second round before it was called off due to inclement weather.
Teams that have been selected to compete include: Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Benedict College, Bethune-Cookman, Fayetteville State, Florida A&M, Hampton, Jackson State, Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone College, Morehouse College, North Carolina Central, Paine College, Saint Augustine's College, Savannah State, Talladega College, Maryland-Eastern Shore, and Winston-Salem State.
TSU began their 2011 campaign by finishing seventh out of twelve teams at the Fossum Invitational, held by Michigan State University during Labor Day weekend. Junior Cameron Scitern led the Tigers by finishing third overall with a tournament total of 218 for a 2-under par score. He earned his highest score of 70 in the third round.
Freshman James Stepp finished second for TSU by shooting 74-81-73 for a total of 228, while Sophomore Ryan Pierson shot 75-77-77 for a total of 229. Andrew Warner and Dallas Hill finished the scoring for TSU by shooting a 231 (77-75-79) and 234 (78-76-80) respectively.
