Anderson notches 10 kills as TSU falls at Belmont 3-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a long road swing Tennessee State returned home to Nashville to take on cross-town foe Belmont at the Curb Event Center. Belmont proved to be too much as they took the match 3-0 (18-25, 21-25, 16-25).

Freshman Arijana Anderson posted her 13th double-digit kill performance of the year tallying 10 winners on the night. The Muncie, Ind. native began the match with five kills in the first stanza.

Defensively the Tigers were led by junior Ileanushka Moldonado with 13 digs. Junior Naomi Wells and freshman Shauntia Carr posted two blocks for TSU.

Belmont (18-3, 11-4) took the early 13-6 advantage in the first set, behind seven kills from four different players. TSU responded with four of the next five points to cut the deficit to four, 14-10. The Tigers picked up kills from Anderson, Wells, Carr in the stretch.

Tennessee State (10-16, 6-9) cut the lead to four on two more occasions in the opening frame with the last time coming at 18-14 after a Wells kill. The Bruins went on to close out the set 25-18.

Anderson finished the set with five kills and one error while hitting .444 from the floor. Carr also chipped three kills with a .750 hitting percentage.

The second set brought a quick start for the Tigers taking a 3-0 lead capped by a kill from junior Sherryce Butler. Belmont answered the early spurt from the Tigers with a 12-5 run of their own to take a 12-8 advantage.

Coach Kathy Roulhac used a timeout, with the Tigers trailing by four to rally the troops. TSU responded to the break and tabbed four of the next five points to cut the lead to one, 13-12. Junior Taylor Swayzer posted two kills in the span.

Belmont then used a rally of their own to extend the lead out to seven, 21-14. Roulhac used her last timeout of the second frame to slow the Bruins offensive effort.

With Belmont one point away from closing out the set 24-17 TSU connected on the next four points to close within three points, 24-21. The home team closed out the set 25-21, to take the 2-0 set lead.

Out of the break the teams traded points, sharing five ties with neither team taking a lead larger than two points. With both teams knotted at 7-7 the Bruins nudged ahead with a 6-1 swing gaining a four point advantage, 13-8.

Anderson ended the run putting down a kill followed by a combo block from Carr and Anderson trimmed the lead down to 13-10.

A 6-2 run from Belmont pushed the lead back out to seven, 19-12, for the home club. The Bruins went on the finish out the set 25-16 to take the third set and win the match 3-0.

Tennessee State returns to action on Saturday when they take on SIU Edwardsville at Noon. The Tigers will honor senior Erika Moss and redshirt junior Naomi Wells before the match as a part of Senior Day festivities.
