Softball Hosts 2013 Tiger Classic

Nashville, Tenn. - Tennessee State will host the Tiger Classic March 8-10. The three day tournament features teams from the SWAC, Summit, Atlantic-10, and the Big Ten. Friday will host five games beginning at 10:00 am with the Tigers taking to the field at 4:00 pm against Saint Louis, followed by a matchup with Alabama State at 6:00 pm.

Six games will be played on Saturday beginning at 9:30 am. TSU and Nebraska-Omaha are scheduled for first pitch at 3:30 pm. The Tigers and the Hoosiers of Indiana close out the night with a 7:30 pm ballgame. On Sunday, games will again begin at 9:30 am. The final day will consist of four games with the Tigers closing out play versus Mississippi Valley State at 1:30 pm and a rematch with Alabama State at 3:30 pm. The Tigers finished 4-1 at the Tiny Lassiter HBCU Classic in Irondale, Ala., last week. The strong performance boosted the TSU record to 5-11 on the season.

Pitchers Shea Morris and Olivia Gamache teamed up to hold opposing batters to a .210 batting average and produced a 0.85 earned run average. Morris finished 3-0 in her three games including her first shutout of the season with a career high 12 strikeout performance over Howard. She concluded the weekend with a one-hitter against Hampton. For her accomplishments, Morris was named Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Jennifer Givens led the team over the weekend with a .688 average (11-for-16) scoring three times and driving in five from her leadoff spot. Audrey Sensing hit .471 (8-for-17) over the five games with a double and her first two collegiate home runs. The freshman drove in a team high seven RBI and picked up a stolen base while recording 24 putouts and four assists for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Her efforts earned her the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week.

On the season, Givens now leads the Tigers with a .429 and is followed by freshman Kiarra Freeman at .396. Ashley Haynes, who entered last week as the top hitter, only saw one at bat due to an injury. Her hit in the lone at bat raised her average to .379.

Freeman and fellow freshman Kacie Daugherty is tops with nine runs scored. Sensing has a team high 10 RBI. In the circle, Morris has 66 strikeouts in 54 innings of work.

Offensively, Jessica Van Nostrand is leading the Billikens with a .323 average, three doubles and eight runs batted in. On the base paths, Jessica Buschjost is a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen bases. SLU relies heavily on Laney Kneib and Brianna Lore. Kneib is 3-2 with a save and a 2.88 ERA in 25 innings pitched. She has only fanned eight batters, but is holding opponents to a .189 average. Brianna Lore has a 3.80 ERA and a 1-4 record. In her 42.2 innings in the circle, she has sat down 21 while issuing 19 free passes.


Alabama State (1-15)

Meagan Dixon and Brehanna Rodrigues drive the hornets' offense. Dixon is 21-for-50 (.420) with four doubles and the only home run hit by ASU this season. Rodrigues is hitting .378 and leads the team with nine runs, a triple, seven walks and a perfect 7-of-7 in stolen bases.


Nebraska-Omaha (17-2)

As a team, the Mavericks are hitting .314 with 22 doubles, seven triples, and 25 HR's. UNO has 120 runs scored, averaging above six a game, and is dangerous on the paths with 25 stolen bases. Seven batters over hitting over .300 as Allie Mathewson leads the team with 25 hits, four doubles, a triple, and eight home runs. Mathewson also has seven stolen bases. Dana Elsasser has toed the rubber for 56 more innings than her fellow pitchers. She is 9-2 with two saves and has registered four shutouts and posts a 1.88 ERA. Ashton Hughes is 4-0 with a 1.88 ERA while Kat Barrow is 3-0 with a 2.07 ERA.

Amanda Wagner leads the Hoosiers hitting .383 (18-for-47) and tops the team with nine runs scored and five doubles. Kassi Farmer and Brianna Meyer have driven in the most runners with 13 and 12, respectively. In the circle, Lora Olson is 5-4 with 32 K's and 22 walks while sporting a 2.01 ERA in 52.1 innings of work. Meaghan Murphy is 5-6 with a save and a 3.07 ERA. In her 68.1 innings, she has fanned 44 opposed to just 12 walks.


Mississippi Valley State (6-12)

The Devilettes are led by two .400-plus hitters. Alex Robertson is hitting .474 (27-for-57) with 17 runs, seven doubles, two triples, and five home runs to go along with 14 RBI. Nicole Burr is at .409 (18-for-44) with nine runs, a double, six dingers and a team high 16 RBI. She also has 15 walks for a .567 on base percentage. Alicia Lorenz and Kimberley Spivey have thrown 100 of the 110 innings pitched. Lorenz is 2-7 with a save and a 5.01 ERA. She has 62 strikeouts in 57.1 innings of work. Spivey has a 6.12 ERA, but leads the team with a 4-5 record. In 42.1 innings, she has walked 29 and fanned 38.
