NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tigers dropped the opening game of their Ohio Valley Conference series with Jacksonville State on a cold Saturday afternoon. The two teams were delayed over three hours due to overnight and early morning rains, forcing a change of a double header to a single game. JSU exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning to secure a 10-0 win at Tiger Field.
Tennessee State is now 14-21, 2-5 in the OVC, while the Gamecocks improved to 21-8, 6-2 in conference.
JSU used a two-run home run in the second inning to take the early lead. Kate Morris opened the bottom of the inning with a single, but the Tigers could not push her home.
Two innings later, the Tigers would threaten as they used back-to-back leadoff hits by Kiarra Freeman and Jayna Hanawahine. The two moved into scoring position on a Rebekka Gross sacrifice bunt, but were once again stranded to end the inning.
JSU would extend their lead to 3-0 with an unearned run in the fifth inning off starter Hannah St. Clair. The freshman held the Gamecocks to three runs until two outs in the seventh inning. St. Clair was tagged for all ten runs, nine earned, as she fell to 2-7 on the season.
A double header is scheduled for Sunday to close out the series. First pitch is set for 12:00pm at Tiger Field and cab be seen on ovcdigitalnetwork.com.
