Murray, Ky. - Four Flying Tigers recorded their personal best to help Tennessee State University hold third place in the team rankings with 24 points after the first day of the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championship on Friday.

Arthur Combest posted his PR in the high jump (2.08m) to win his first OVC title in the event during outdoor competition after finishing second last year.

Combest ends the Flying Tigers' two-year individual champion drought becoming the first to win a single crown since Darreal Beal won the long jump for TSU in 2009.

Jamal Henderson and Royce Dates also grabbed their personal best in the event. Henderson finished third (2.03m) and Dates rounded out the scoring in fifth (1.88m).

Earlier, in his first OVC Outdoor Championship, Dates, a transfer, finished third in the long jump (7.21m).

On the track, five sprinters made their way to Saturday's final. Micah Poole (10.83s), Julian Mallory (11.06s), Johnnie Poole (11.06s), and Lequinn Davis (11.18s) all qualified for the finals in the 100m.

M. Poole tacked on his fastest career time of 10.83s to record the top time entering into tomorrow's final.

Mallory also qualified for the final heat of the 200m (21.95s) along with Michael Rideout (21.97s).  Rideout also recorded a career best in the event to advance.

In the 800m, Chris Hobbs pulled his best career performance running a time of 1:58.23 to sneak into the final round.

Day one of the Championship was without prelims in the 400m, 110m hurdles, and 400m hurdles due to limited entries in the event. All three events will run Saturday, with lanes selected based on the runners entry times from the regular season.

After six events, Eastern Illinois holds the lead with 66 points followed by Southeast Missouri State in second with 62 points.

The finals will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, on the Marshall Gage Track inside Stewart Stadium in Murray, Ky.
