The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by recognizing one of the premier jumpers in Tennessee State track and field history.

As an 18-year-old graduate of Hoke County High School in N.C., Kathy McMillan set a new U.S. record of 22-3 (6.78) in winning the 1976 AAU long jump. She was also instrumental in Helping Hoke County High School to four team state championships in girls' track and field.

After high school, McMillan then went to the Montréal Olympics where she had a marginal foul of 22-4½ (6.82), that would have won the gold, but McMillan had to settle for second place and a silver medal. Her jump tied the record for the longest jump by an American woman.

McMillan accomplished all of this before she even enrolled at TSU.

After the Games, the Raeford N.C. native enrolled at Tennessee State where she got the opportunity to run under legendary track coach Ed Temple.

Under Temple's guidance, McMillan finished second in the AAU competitions in 1977 and 1978. Besides winning the gold medal in the 1979 Pan American Games in the long jump- her eighth Pan Am medal- she placed second in the Olympic trials in 1980 but could not compete, due to the U.S. boycott.

McMillan was inducted into the Tennessee State Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
