SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – The men’s golf continued to cut strokes from round-to-round as the shot a 301 on the final day of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate hosted by Tennessee Tech. The Tigers (311-303-301=915) finished 11th, and just missed catching Ohio Valley Conference opponent Murray State by one stroke. The University of Tennessee took home the title with an -11 under, 853.
Tennessee State did manage to record the sixth best team score of the day at the par-72, 6,884 yard, Sevierville Golf Club. Tuesday was played under better conditions than the previous day, as the sun broke through the clouds around mid-morning as temperatures reached 61 degrees.
James Stepp (79-74-72=225) tied for the 12th best score of the round with an Even, 72. The junior just missed a hole-in-one on the short part-4, 12th. Stepp finished the round with four birdies and 38 pars on the tournament.
Blake Burgett (77-79-73=229) bounced back after a tough first day and shot a 1-over, 73. Burgett tied for 44th, while Andrew Warner (77-78-75=230) tied for 48th after hitting 11 fairways and 15 greens. The senior drained a 25-foot putt on the par-4, 7th for his lone birdie of the day.
Matt Campbell (78-75-81=234) carded birdies on the par-5, 7th and the par-3, 17th. Campbell hit a 3-wood from 255-yards out to within 30-feet to two putt on No. 7, while using a 9-iron from 146 to within six feet on No. 17.
On the final hole of the day, the par-3, 13th, Codie Welborn (86-76-82=244) hit a 9-iron to with a foot of the pin to card his lone birdie of the day.
The Tigers return to the course on Apr. 7-8 in Jonesboro, Ark., for the 54-hole Red Wolves Classic hosted by Arkansas State.
