2013 Tennessee State Football Season Highlights

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State football team completed one of its main goals this past season by making the playoffs while posting a 10-4 record.

The Tigers finished second in Ohio Valley Conference play with a 6-2 record, and their 31-0 win over Butler was their first postseason victory in nearly 27 years.

TSU turned in its finest season of this millennium and below are just a handful of the many accomplishments last year’s crop of Tigers produced.

·         Tennessee State made the playoffs for the first time since 1999
·         Tennessee State won a playoff game for the first time since 1986
·         First OVC team to win a road playoff game since 1986
·         The Tigers became the first HBCU team to win a playoff game since 1999
·         TSU won the Black College National Championship for the first time since 1982
·         Finished second in the OVC with a 10-4 record, 6-2 in conference
·         School-record 12 selected to All-OVC teams
·         Seven All-Americans on 2013 squad
·         Rod Reed a finalist for Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award
·         Winners of the 2013 Conaway Cup for top HBCU team
·         Daniel Fitzpatrick one of 11 on FCS ADA All-American Team
·         Daniel Fitzpatrick led Division I with eight interceptions
·         Kadeem Edwards invited to Senior Bowl; first TSU player to receive an invite since 2008
·         Finished No. 17 in final FCS Coaches Poll
·         Four players selected All-Americans by the Associated Press
·         Anthony Bass chosen OVC Defensive Player of the Year
·         Rod Reed named HBCU Coach of the Year by HSRN and BOXTOROW
·         Won Sgt. York Trophy for fifth time
·         Jamin Godfery broke the school’s all-time scoring record with 311 career points
·         Won the Southern Heritage Classic over Jackson State on Sept. 14
·         Five players won OVC Player of the Week honors
·         Recorded double-digit victories for first time since 1999
·         Tim Broughton became fifth TSU player to record over 1,000 yards rushing, totaling 1,146
·         Nick Thrasher led the OVC in tackles with 110
·         Blocked the second most punts in FCS (3)
·         Threw the second fewest interceptions in FCS (4)
·         Picked off the third most passes in FCS (21)
·         Had the FCS’s seventh best scoring defense (18.1 points per game)
·         Ranked sixth in the FCS in total defense (296.9 yards per game)
·         Michael German moved to sixth place in TSU history in passing yards (5,768) and scores (43)
·         TSU ranked first in the OVC in rushing defense, scoring defense, pass defense and total defense
