Reed, Four Tigers Honored by HSRN

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Heritage Sports Radio Network named Tennessee State head coach Rod Reed Coach of the Year and four Tigers made the HSRN All-American Team including Daniel Fitzpatrick, who was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Year.

The other players who made the squad were guard Kadeem Edwards, tight end A.C. Leonard and defensive end Anthony Bass.

Reed led the Tigers to their first appearance in the FCS Playoffs since 1999 and first postseason win since 1986.  The Tigers defeated Butler 31-0 in the first round before falling to Eastern Illinois in the second round.  The Tigers finished the season 10-4 and second in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Fitzpatrick anchored a secondary that ranked third nationally in total passes intercepted (21) and a defense that was sixth nationally in total defense (296.9 yards/game) and seventh in scoring defense (18.1 points/game).The strong safety finished the year with 75 tackles (52 solo), 5.5 TFL and eight pass breakups and ranked first nationally in total interceptions with eight.

Edwards was selected to the All-Ohio Valley Conference Team for the third consecutive time following a season in which he started 13 games at left guard. The four-year starter will represent TSU in the 2014 Reese’s Senior Bowl on Jan. 25.

Leonard finished second on the Tigers with 34 receptions and 441 yards for an average of 13 yards per catch. The junior also added five touchdowns, placing him third on the squad.

Bass was named OVC Defensive Player of the Year after recording 10 sacks, 34 stops and 14.5 tackles for loss. The junior also forced and recovered a pair of fumbles on the campaign.
