Tennessee State University redshirt freshman quarterback Michael German was named a finalist for the inaugural Fathead.com/Sports Network Jerry Rice Award as announced on Monday.

The Jerry Rice Award is awarded to the Most Outstanding Freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision. The award is named after NFL Hall of Famer and Mississippi Valley State star Jerry Rice.  German is 1 of 20 finalists selected.

German, a native of Pompano Beach, Fla., made his first career start on Sept. 24 at Air Force. Since then, the redshirt freshman has been the main cog for the TSU offense.

He completed 140 passes for 1,889 yards, ranking 47th with a pass efficiency rating of 130.05. German threw 137 pass attempts before throwing an interception. He also recorded 12 passing touchdowns, the most of any TSU quarterback since Antonio Heffner in 2008.

The quarterback became the first TSU freshman to throw for over 250+ yards in four games. His longest pass of the season was an 80-yard strike to Calvin McNairl at Air Force.

German earned four OVC Newcomer of the Week honors, garnering the most ever by a TSU student-athlete.
