NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State head coach Rod Reed was named Coach of the Year and six Tigers were selected to the All-American team as announced by BOXTOROW on Monday.

Kadeem Edwards, A.C. Leonard, Anthony Bass, Antonio Harper, Nick Thrasher and Daniel Fitzpatrick made the HBCU 22-man team while kicker Jamin Godfrey was given an honorable mention.

Reed led the Tigers to their first appearance in the FCS Playoffs since 1999 and first postseason win since 1986.  The Tigers defeated Butler 31-0 in the first round before falling to Eastern Illinois in the second round.  The Tigers finished the season 10-4 and finished as runner-ups in the BOXTOROW final coaches’ and media polls.

Edwards led all offensive linemen in votes at the guard position after helping TSU run for 2,293 yards on the ground. Tennessee State also only allowed 2.6 sacks per contest.

Leonard was named a Boxtorow All-American for the second year in a row, recording 31 receptions for 441 yards, five touchdowns.

Bass was the leading vote-getter among defensive linemen.  The OVC Defensive Player of the Year registered 10 sacks, 14.5 tackles for loss, 34 tackles (18 solo), and four pass breakups.

Harper finished fifth on TSU in stops with 49 and was second with 13 tackles for loss. He also recorded seven sacks and blocked a field goal against Bethune-Cookman.

Thrasher led the OVC with 112 tackles and was the captain of a defense that ranked sixth nationally in yards per game (296).

Fitzpatrick was the leading vote-getter in the defensive secondary.  Fitzpatrick is first in FCS in interceptions (8); he returned the interceptions for 140 yards and three touchdowns.  He also broke up eight passes and registered 75 tackles (52 solo).

Godfrey nailed 18-of-29 field goals and tallied 97 points, breaking Alfred Reese’s 32-year scoring record for points in a career.

TSU had six players on the All-American team, more than any other school.
