Martin, Tenn. - The Tennessee State volleyball team moved to 5-2 in OVC play with a 3-1 (32-30, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23) victory at UT Martin.

Junior setter Erika Moss had a season-high 60 assists in the win which was just two shy of her career-high of 62 that she set last season.

Most of Moss' assists went to sophomore outside hitter Naomi Wells who led TSU with 18 kills. However, three other Tigers had double-digit kills including freshman middle blocker Lindsay Hornsby and sophomore Sherryce Butler and Rachel Ambroch.

Wells and Ambroch both had over ten digs as well, but senior libero Britani Hathorn had a game-high 24.Hathorn also chipped in with two assists of her own.

Neither team could pull away early in set one, and the score was tied at seven. Then, the Tigers went on a small 3-0 run with a kill from Ambroch sandwiched in between a pair from Butler. The Skyhawks fought back later in the frame and tied the score at 13 when a Hornsby attack went wide. The sides traded points for the next few minutes before a kill from Moss put the Tigers up three at 21-18. This score prompted a timeout from UT Martin, but the Skyhawks could not cut into the TSU lead. With TSU only needing one more point to win the opening period, UT Martin had back-to-back kills to tie the score at 24. The teams went back and forth for the reminder of the set with Butler, Moss, Ambroch and Wells all recording kills before the Tigers finally won the set, 32-30.

The Tigers could not build on their lead in the second frame, and quickly fell behind, 7-10. The Tigers clawed back to tie the score at 17 when Moss set up a perfect kill for Ambroch. UT Martin called for a stoppage of play, but that only benefitted the Tigers as TSU rattled off three-straight points. Again, the Skyhawks called time and this time they found their groove, ending the set on an 8-2 run.

With the match tied at one set apiece, the Tigers started the third frame on an 11-5 run that featured kills from four different players. UT Martin went on a 4-0 run and eventually cut the Tiger lead to two. More Moss assisted kills gave the Tigers a big lead once again and the team never looked back. Butler recorded two of the final three points in the period and the Tigers won set three by seven.

The fourth frame started much like the fourth as the Tigers raced out to an early 10-5 lead when Hornsby recorded her fourth kill of the set. UT Martin recovered and inched back to within four at 14-10 and then three at 19-16. The Skyhawks got within one before TSU took a timeout to stem the flow of UT Martin points. Kills by Wells and Ambroch immediately put the Tigers back in the driver's seat, but TSU would need another timeout before finally winning the match.

TSU's next match will be tomorrow at Southeast Missouri at 2 p.m.
