The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by recognizing a first in Tennessee State football history.

In 1946, TSU won its first of 12 Black College National Championships. In the process, the squad also earned the school's first of 11 Midwestern Conference titles.

Coach Henry Kean's Tigers posted a 10-1 record on the year, with the only loss coming at the hands of North Carolina College in TSU's first appearance in a classic.

Among the victories were a 33-0 win over Knoxville College on homecoming and a narrow one-point win over Southern.

The strength of the 1946 Tigers was its offense. The squad boasted a total of four All-Americans and all four played on the offensive side.

The offense ran through Nathaniel Taylor who also benefitted from playing alongside fellow All-Americans Robert Drummond (tackle), William Washington (end) and Raymond Whitmon (halfback).

Drummond would later make history in 1947 by becoming the first Tiger to be named an All-American in three seasons.

The quartet helped of Drummond, Taylor, Eashington and Whitmon helped TSU put up 248 points in 1946 including two games with over 30 points.

The Tiger defense was no slouch, however. TSU held opponents to just 41 points on the year and pitched six shutouts.

A large core of the 1946 team returned the following year and repeated as champions, posting a perfect 10-0 record.

Kean ended his career with a 93-15-3 record in 10 seasons.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
