Lady Tigers Drop Season Opener at Kansas State

Manhattan, Kan. --- Offensive struggles hampered the Tennessee State University women’s basketball team in an, 85-53, loss to Big 12 member Kansas State Friday night in Bramlage Coliseum.

Redshirt Junior Chelsea Hudson led the team with 16 points and four steals while freshmen Diamond Beatty and I’mani Davis each added nine points. Davis also recorded a team-high seven rebounds.

TSU (0-1) shot 25.4 percent (16-of-63) from the field while only connecting 4-of-21 from beyond the arc.

After a few early misses and a couple of turnovers, Tennessee State fell behind, 11-0, before the first media timeout.

Brianna Lawrence nailed a triple from the top of the key to get TSU on the board about five minutes into the game. The bucket sparked a 10-5 run that brought the Lady Tigers to within six, 16-10, at the 11:23 mark.

The score was, 27-16, in favor of Kansas State when the Wildcats used a 13-3 run to carry a, 40-19, advantage into the halftime break.

TSU opened the second half by outscoring K-State 11-7 and continued to chip away at the lead. Over a span of three and a half minutes the Lady Tigers put together a 9-2 rally that including six points from Chelsea Hudson and a triple from Brianna Lawrence.

The spurt cut the deficit down to 13 and forced a K-State timeout. TSU, however, went scoreless over the next six minutes and saw the lead balloon back up to, 67-39.

A reverse lay-up by Hudson snapped the scoring drought for TSU with 5:42 left on the clock before K-State closed the half with another rally to make the final score, 85-53.

Tennessee State registered 14 steals, seven assists and three blocks in the contest. TSU lost the battle of the boards, 43-34, and committed 20 turnovers.

The Lady Tigers continue their season-opening road swing with a contest at Kennesaw State on Monday, Nov. 11. Game-time is slated for 7 p.m. eastern in the KSU Convocation Center.
