Knoxville, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State Cheerleaders had an impressive showing at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Cheer Camp held at the University of Tennessee.

The camp was a three-day competition that featured 17 teams from schools across the country including host Tennessee, Appalachian State and OVC members Tennessee Tech and Austin Peay.

After three days of hard work, Tennessee State walked away from UCA camp with a number of awards. The Big Blue squad hauled in two first place trophies for Overall and Game Day performance while garnering trophies and ribbons for Cheer and Fight Song Performance.

Coach Chocez Cane, Spirit Coordinator and Cheerleading Coach, is beginning her second season with the Tiger program.

“This was a learning experience for me and for the most part I feel I handled myself very well, I am so proud of how my girls performed and how they took my constructive criticism and applied it to their work ethic and team comradery.”

The squad also notched plaques for Leadership and Most Improved.

“We learned a lot of key techniques at this camp that we can slowly implement into our traditional routines for TSU,” said sophomore Leah Symonette. “The experience was fun. I feel as though we went to camp as 11 individuals but left as a functional team.”

Universal Cheerleaders Association was founded in 1974 by Jeff Webb to provide high quality educational training for college and high school cheerleaders through summer camps and clinics on college campuses.

UCA’s goal is to inspire leadership on and off the field. All of UCA’s material and programs are centrally focused on the traditional role of cheerleading. UCA believes that the primary purpose of a cheerleader is to support athletic programs and lead the crowd before and during games. Cheerleaders play an instrumental role in raising, leading and maintaining school spirit in and around their communities. In short, they are leaders in building general morale at their school!
