TSU Athletics Mourns the Loss of Coach Sam Whitmon

Nashville, Tenn. --- On Saturday Oct. 19, former Tennessee State University coach Samuel Whitmon transitioned from this earth.

Whitmon, served as the head coach for the Tiger baseball team as well as an assistant for football under legendary coaches Howard Gentry and John Merritt.

As football’s backfield coach, Whitmon experienced many winning seasons with the Tigers, including 1965 in which Big Blue went undefeated (9-0-1) in the regular season. The 1965 squad and coaching staff were recognized as the honorees for the 2010 John Merritt Classic football game.

In addition to his duties as a coach, Whitmon also spent time as the Director of Athletics as well as a professor in the Biology department.

The TSU football All-American, also held the role of head football coach at nearby Fisk University.
