Governors Come to Town Thursday Night

TODAY'S GAME

The Tennessee State men’s basketball team welcomes in-state foe Austin Peay on Thursday for a pivotal conference matchup. Thursday’s game marks the lone meeting between the two Tennessee schools. Tip time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Gentry center.

TIGERS AT A GLANCE

Tennessee State is coming off of its third win of the season on Jan. 30 over Tennessee Tech. The win pushed the Tigers to 2-8 in conference play, with the other conference win being over Jacksonville State in early January.

Big Blue is powered by a potent offensive attack, spearheaded by senior Patrick Miller. The Chicago native has taken the league by storm averaging 23.3 points per night, in league play Miller has increased his scoring output to a 26.6 points a night clip.

In the paint the M.J. Rhett has been a force all year long. The senior is nearly averaging a double-double a night with an average of 10.5 points and 8.8 rebounds a night. On the year Rhett has tallied 10 double-doubles on the year.

LAST TIME OUT

The Tennessee State men’s basketball team outscored Tennessee Tech 45-32 during the second half allowing the Tigers to record their first road victory of the season on Thursday night, 81-68.

TSU (3-21, 2-8 OVC) was paced by Patrick Miller who scored 27 points on 5-of-10 shooting and dished out five assists. The game marks the 22nd time that the senior has led the Tigers in points.

Juniors M.J. Rhett and Jay Harris finished in double-figures as well, pouring in 20 and 11 points, respectively. Rhett also secured a team-high eight rebounds.

SCOUTING AUSTIN PEAY

Austin Peay comes into Thursday’s meeting with a 9-13 record and a 3-5 mark in conference play. The Governors have lost five of their last six contests, with the lone win coming against Tennessee Tech on Jan. 25.

Peay is led by sophomore Chris Horton who leads the team in rebounds and scoring average. Horton’s 9.8 rebounds per contest stands as the third best mark in the Ohio Valley. Combined with the 11th best scoring average in the league (14.0), Horton stands as one of the finest post players in the OVC.

In the backcourt the Governors are paced by senior Travis Betran. The senior guard is averaging 13.5 points per contest. Betran is also one of the top 3-point shooters in the Ohio Valley making an average of 2.5 triples a game.

The duo makes up a substantial part of the fifth scoring offense in the conference, pouring in 75.3 points a night. APSU’s attack is aided by a 47.8 shooting percentage, which makes Peay the third best shooting time in the Ohio Valley Conference.

SERIES HISTORY

Tennessee State will square off against Austin Peay for the 68th time, with the Governors holding a 25-42 edge in the series.

LAST TIME WE MET

The Tennessee State men's basketball team escaped Clarksville, Tenn. with an 88-82 overtime victory over Austin Peay.

With the score tied at 65 with only five seconds to go in the game, APSU's Will Triggs stole the ball and passed it up ahead to Herdie Lawrence. Lawrence scored a layup, giving APSU a two-point lead.

On TSU's inbound play, the Tigers threw the ball down the court and Jordan Cyphers caught the pass and attempted a triple. The shot fell short of the rim, but right into the hands of Kellen Thornton. Thornton tipped the ball in the hoop with just tenths of a second remaining in the game to force overtime.

In the extra period, Patrick Miller scored nine points and led TSU (14-10, 8-3 OVC) to the six-point victory. Miller's dunk with 27 seconds left in the game made the score 86-77 and ended all hopes of a miracle by the Govs.
