NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State softball program took part in the Martin Luther King Day of service on Monday. The team helped in the painting of the hallways at McKissack Middle School. The day is a part of a series of community service events the softball team has been a part of this year.

“Being a part of this community is important,” said head coach Jeff Dabney. “Doing things in this community is huge for our program and it is important to me. It has never been my thing to promote it, I just like to do things in the community.”

In October, the team participated in the Walk to Defeat ALS at Centennial Park. It is the largest annual event for the Tennessee Chapter ALS Association.

“This is the second year we have been involved in the ALS Walk,” Dabney stated. “It was brought to our attention because it affects one of our family members. Two of our players have had a family member who has passed due to ALS. Obviously it affects someone within our program, so it is important to me.”

The team began the fall with a cookout and play day with Big Brothers and Big Sisters. The Tigers helped with team and individual games, face painting, field events, the barbecue and spending time with the kids.

“I am not sure if the kids enjoyed it more than our team did,” Dabney said. “We definitely made a connection with Big Brothers and Big Sisters. We are trying to do an event during one of our games on campus where we host them.”

Coach Dabney and the Tigers are continuing to make an impact in the community.

“Our kids want to do things to help others and be a part of Nashville, TSU and the surrounding communities,” Dabney commented. “It is important for our kids to know it is about helping others.”
