Hartly, DE – The Tennessee State Tigers and Winston-Salem State Rams have finished the 2013 football season as the top teams in the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN) football poll(s) for Division I (FCS) and Division II, respectively and are winners of the 2013 HSRN Conaway Cup.

The HSRN Conaway Cup, named in honor late HSRN Co-Founder LeCounte Conaway is indicative of the HSRN National Football Champion in the respective divisions. This is the third consecutive win for Winston-Salem State in Division II.

Both teams competed and won first round games in the NCAA Play-offs. Tennessee State defeated Butler 31-0 in the FCS first round, but fell in the second round to #2 ranked Eastern Illinois. Winston-Salem State defeated Slippery Rock 27-20 in the first round, but dropped their second round game to #1 ranked Shepherd.

Three other HBCU teams competed in the NCAA Play-offs, with Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State losing in the first round of the FCS play-offs to Coastal Carolina and Furman, respectively and Tuskegee losing in the first round of the Division II play-offs to North Alabama.

In the final Division I (FCS) poll, the top three teams were Tennessee State, Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State. Southern made the biggest jump, from sixth to fourth following their 34-27 (2OT) win over Jackson State in the SWAC Championship game. The final Division II poll ends the same as the last regular season poll topped by Winston-Salem State, Tuskegee and Virginia State as the top three teams.
