FINAL STATISTICS

NASHVILLE, TENN. --- Rachel Allen buried a triple to force overtime but the Tennessee State University women’s basketball team fell short in an, 81-78, loss to Lipscomb Tuesday night in the Gentry Center.

Tennessee State posted a season-high 78 points but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Tigers fell to 1-6 on the season. Lipscomb (1-4) picked up its first win of the 2013-14 campaign.

Rachel Allen led TSU with 20 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists. Chelsea Hudson recorded a double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds while Jayda Johnson finished the contest with 14 points and nine boards.

After an early tie, Tennessee State began to take control of the game in the first half. Back-to-back buckets from Rachel Allen made the score, 16-10, in favor of the home team before a three-pointer by Diamond Beatty sparked a TSU rally.

The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Bisons, 17-6, over a span of eight minutes to go ahead, 31-16. The momentum shifted towards the end of the half as Lipscomb used an 11-3 spurt to close the gap to, 34-27, at the break.

Jemilah Leonard christened the second half with a triple from the corner to put TSU back up by double-digits. The cushion was short lived though as Lipscomb responded with a 12-2 run to knot the score at 39-all.

The visitors took the lead on the ensuing possession and moved ahead, 43-39, before Rachel Allen scored to end a five-minute scoring drought by the Lady Tigers.

A free-throw by Chelsea Hudson pulled the Lady Tigers even but The Lady Bisons regained the advantage behind another (13-2) run.

With 6:52 left to play, TSU was trailing, 59-49, when a 9-2 run cut the deficit down to three points.

A few possessions later, a steal followed by two free-throws by Jayda Johnson pulled TSU within one.

Lipscomb had the ball and was leading, 69-66, with 45.2 seconds remaining when TSU forced a turnover. On the next possession, Rachel Allen buried a triple from the top of the key to tie the game, 69-69, with 21.2 seconds on the clock.

The Lady Bisons missed their next shot attempt and the Lady Tigers came away with the rebound. With 1.4 seconds on the clock, TSU wasn’t able to get a shot off and the game went to overtime.

In the extra frame, TSU was down, 76-75, when the Lady Tigers gave up two crucial offensive rebounds that allowed Lipscomb to go ahead, 79-75, with 16.5 seconds left.

Diamond Beatty knocked down a triple with 6.5 seconds left then TSU was forced to foul. Lipscomb made both free-throws to go up by three. After going the length of the floor, Rachel Allen’s three-point shot was off the mark.

Tennessee State shot 35.1 percent from the field, including 30.8 percent from beyond the arc. TSU struggled from the free-throw line once again, only connecting 16-of-28 from the charity stripe.

Lipscomb shot 43.1 percent from the field and 26.1 percent from three-point range.

TSU forced LU into 20 turnovers and won the battle of the boards, 54-49.

The Lady Tigers return to action on Dec. 4 at Jacksonville.
