Tigers to Meet Host Morehead State Thursday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the third straight season coach Kathy Roulhac and the Tigers will take part in the OVC tournament.

Tennessee State finished the regular season 10-7 with a 6-10 conference record to earn the eighth and final seed in the conference tournament. In the first match the Tigers will take on regular season champion and tournament host Morehead State (24-7, 15-1).

The two East Division foes matched up twice in the regular season with the Eagles taking both contests in straight sets.

In the first meeting on Sept. 28 freshman Arijana Anderson totaled 13 kills with a .235 hitting percentage to lead the Tigers attack. Junior Naomi Wells also added in seven kills in the match.

Defensively both Wells and junior Ileanushka Moldonado totaled 17 digs apiece in the contest. As a team the Tigers logged three blocks on the day.

Both teams played again at Morehead State on Nov. 8 with the Eagles coming out on top 3-0. Junior Sherryce Butler logged 13 kills and hit .417 from the field.

On the defensive end the Tigers totaled 36 digs, Wells led the way with 10 scoops on the night. As a team the Tennessee State block finished with five blocks.

Tennessee State comes into the tournament with the conference’s kills and points leader in junior Naomi Wells. The Huntsville, Ala. native is averaging 3.64 kills and 4.11 points per set.

Two-time All-OVC senior setter Erika Moss leads the Tigers attack with 10.24 helpers per frame. Her average is the third best in the Ohio Valley.

As a team the Tigers rank sixth in both kills and assists per set, with a 12.61 and 11.96 average respectively.

The Tigers are averaging 1.56 blocks and 15.09 digs per set while holding opponents to a .214 hitting percentage on the year.

For Morehead State it all starts defensively as the Eagles hold opponents to an OVC best .142 hitting percentage. Ranking in the top four in both blocks (3rd, 1.89 per set) and digs (16.18 per set). Leading the way for the Eagles defensively is senior Leslie Schellhaas with an average of 5.13 digs per frame, which ranks second in the OVC. On the Block the Eagles turn to sophomore Hannah Sigala, who averages 0.96 roofs per set.

Offensively Morehead State features a balanced attack ranking second in the conference in both kills (13.06) and assists (12.40) per set. Junior Colby Cameron leads the attack with 10.03 assists per stanza. Cameron  organizies a balanced attack with four players averaging more than 2.34 kills per frame on the year.

The winner of Thursday’s match will square off with the winner of the fifth seed Austin Peay and the fourth seed Southeast Missouri. That match will take place Friday at Morehead State with first serve set for 6 p.m.
