NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Four members of the Tennessee State football team’s defensive unit were named honorable mentions by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) following the squad’s, 29-15, victory at UT Martin last week.

Anthony Bass was nominated for Defensive Lineman of the Week, Nick Thrasher for linebacker and Daniel Fitzpatrick and De’Ante Saunders represented the secondary.

Against UT Martin, Bass tallied a pair of stops including one tackle for loss. The junior also recorded a pass break-up, quarterback hurry and blocked a field goal. Bass is the OVC leader in sacks with six.

Thrasher tied for the team-lead in tackles with 10 against the Skyhawks, 2.5 of which were behind the line of scrimmage. The junior also forced and recovered a fumble in the big road victory. Thrasher leads all Tigers this year with 58 stops.

Fitzpatrick recorded nine tackles and the Ft. Wayne, Ind. native returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown, giving TSU a, 21-0, lead. The interception was Fitzpatrick’s fifth of the season and his second pick six of the year.

Saunders had five wrap-ups at Martin including one tackle for loss. The junior also returned the field goal that Bass blocked for a Tiger touchdown. Saunders is third on the team in pass break-ups with four.

The Tigers (7-1, 4-0 OVC) only allowed 4.1 yards per play, recorded 12 tackles for loss (five sacks), tallied two takeaways and forced 19 Skyhawk penalties last game.

The Tigers will need to continue to get solid production from its defensive unit this week when the team hosts Eastern Illinois’s No. 1 ranked offense at 4 p.m. at LP Field.
