NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee State football will open their 2013 schedule at home with the 15th annual John Merritt Classic on Sunday, Sept. 1 vs. Bethune-Cookman at LP Field.

The Tigers defeated B-CU last season in Daytona Beach, Fla., 21-14. This will be the Wildcats first appearance at the Classic.

"Hosting the John Merritt Classic on Sunday is really not new," said Athletics Director Teresa Phillips. "The highest attended (31,119) JMC game was actually played on a Sunday versus Alabama State in 1999. We hope to have a great Labor Day weekend and another highly attended game again in 2013!"

TSU improved to 10-4 all-time in the Merritt Classic with a 17-14 season opening victory against Florida A&M during the 2012 season.

The Sept. 1 game is the only home contest for the Tigers during the first month of the season as TSU will travel to Florida A&M, Jackson State (Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis), Tennessee Tech and Central State (Gateway Classic in St. Louis).

TSU returns to Nashville on Oct. 5 to host Southeast Missouri State. Homecoming against Eastern Illinois will take place on Oct. 26. The Tigers close out the 2013 campaign with home games vs. Austin Peay on Nov. 9 and Murray State on Nov. 16.

Tennessee State finished the 2012 season 8-3, the most wins in an 11 game season since 2001, They also led all OVC teams with six first-team conference selections, including five on the offensive side of the ball.
