Brentwood, Tenn. - On Tuesday, Tennessee State's Robert Covington was selected the Ohio Valley Conference's Player of the Week.

The senior forward was then selected as the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's Player of the Week on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Covington's awards come after helping TSU snap a two-game losing streak with a pair of victories last week as he averaged 28.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 1.5 assists per game.

Covington was also efficient in his scoring, hitting 65.4 percent (17-of-26) of his shots from the field, 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from 3-point range and 94.4 percent (17-of-18) from the free throw line.

Covington had a season-high 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting as TSU opened the week with a win over in-city rival Fisk in what was the team's first home game of the season. The senior also pulled down a season-high 14 rebounds, had five steals and two assists in the convincing victory.

The Bellwood, Ill. native ended the week with 27 points, six rebounds, four steals, an assist and a block in TSU's first road victory over Alabama A&M.

Covington currently ranks seventh in the OVC in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.5 and 7.5 per contest, respectively. He also is second in the conference in steals per game with 2.5 per game, trailing only teammate Patrick Miller who averages 2.7.

The conference award is the third of its kind for Covington, as he has now been selected as OVC Player of the Week once in each of the last three seasons. His first nomination was on Dec. 27, 2010 while his last was on Nov. 21, 2011.

This is Covington's first career TSWA Player of the Week selection.
