Nashville, Tenn. - On Monday, Tennessee State men's basketball coach Travis Williams addressed an auditorium full of students at Brick Church Middle School.

With the entire middle school in attendance, Williams told the children about his upbringing and acknowledged some of the troubles that he has been through in his life. The coach then touched on how even through those hard times, he still became successful through hard work on the basketball court and in the classroom.

"When I was growing up, I wish I had the opportunity for somebody to give me advice. I feel blessed to be given the opportunity to try and help these kids," Williams said.

The talk was set up by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and was meant to remind kids that academics are important, as well as the choices that they make.

"The point that I tried to get across was that each one of those young kids has a story and in life you need to make good decisions to make the story better," Williams said. "Each one of them needs to be determined when it comes to academics, not have a bad attitude and be bought in to what their teachers are trying to get across to them."

This was yet another community service that the men's basketball team has taken part in this year. Earlier this month, members of the team went to the Vanderbilt Children's Hospital to visit with patients.

Williams will lead his team against Tennessee Tech on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
