Charleston, Ill. - Tennessee State University men's and women's tennis fell in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup at Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers men (0-4, 0-4 OVC) played close in a pair of sets, but dropped a 6-1 match to Eastern Illinois (1-6, 1-1 OVC). EIU's women (5-7, 1-1 OVC) swept the Tigers, 7-0, as TSU fell to 0-4 (0-4 OVC) this season.
TSU had a close battle with EIU in men's doubles, as Jamie Firth and David Constantinesu edged the Tigers' William Simmons and Jared Asher, 8-6. In the No. 1 doubles, the Panthers' tandem of Kevin Bauman/Warren Race won 8-2 over TSU's Lawrence Washington and Shaun Ingram.
The Tigers forfeited points at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles slot. Constantinesu won 6-0, 6-0 over James Shelton in the five spot. Asher retired early in a 6-0, 2-0 loss to Bauman. In the three spot, Firth defeated Simmons (6-1, 6-2).
Ingram dropped a 6-0, 6-1 No. 2 singles match to Eastern Illinois' Race. Washington battled and picked up two set victories (6-2, 6-2) over Michael Sperry to claim the Tigers' lone point.
In women's doubles action, Jennifer Kim/Kristen Laird defeated Shardel Suber/Khadijah Williams, 8-0. In the two spot, Melynda Simmons/Kryston Mason dropped an 8-0 contest to EIU's Amanda Dibbs/Annie Egan.
In the top doubles match, Janelle Prisner/Merritt Whitley won 8-0 over TSU's sister duo of Lauren and London Thomas.
Williams, a junior for the Tigers, fell (6-1, 6-0) to Egan in the six slot. Laird knocked off Suber (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 5 hole.
Eastern Illinois' Kim picked up a win (6-0, 6-0) over Mason, while Dibbs beat Lauren Thomas (6-0, 6-0). In the two spot, Whitley won over London Thomas (6-0, 6-0).
TSU's Simmons dropped the No. 1 point (6-0, 6-0) to EIU's Janelle Prisner.
Tennessee State tennis returns back to Nashville for a non-conference match with Western Kentucky on Thursday, March 29. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. at the TSU Tennis Complex.
