Nashville, Tenn. - For a consecutive season, four players from the Tennessee State University football team was selected to the 2011 Phll Steele's Magazine Preseason All Ohio Valley Conference Team.

Rico Council was named to the first team defense while John Jones Jr. was selected to the second team. With their first preseason honors, London Davis and Kadeem Edwards were selected to the second team offense.

Council receives his first preseason selection of 2011 after being named to the 2010 Phil Steele All OVC Preseason Second Team.

Last year, he recorded the best season of his career leading TSU in sacks with four. Council finished second on the team in stops with a career season best with 79 tackles (39 solo). He is now currently listed second all time in career tackles at TSU behind current head coach Rod Reed (406).

In 2010, Council added six tackles for a loss with a pass break-up and pass deflection. He was named OVC Defensive Player of the Week twice as a result of his performance against Florida A&M and Southeast Missouri State. Against SEMO, he tallied a career high in a game with 15 tackles.

At the end of the year, he was named to the All OVC Second Team. It was the second time in his career he received post season honors by the league. At the end of 2008, he was selected to the All OVC Newcomer Team after his first season with the Tigers. That year, he led the team in tackles with 67 (40 solo) as a true freshman.

Council has garnered preseason nominations since arriving at TSU. He has also been named to the 2010 and 2009 Consensus Draft Services preseason All FCS and All HBCU squads.

Davis receives his first preseason recognition after transferring from Illinois at the beginning of the 2010 campaign. He was the only tight end to record a reception last year. Davis hauled in seven receptions for 102 yards averaging 14.6 yds/rec. and 10.2 yds/game.

Edwards joins his teammates after starting in six games last year sharing the duties at left guard. He helped the Tigers improve on offense finishing second in the OVC in rushing with 2, 090 total yards averaging 190 yds/game.

As a member of the offensive line, Edwards made an impact on the line of scrimmage helping the Tigers amass 3, 910 yards while averaging 355.5 per game. His maturation last year helped TSU rank fourth in sacks allowed in the league with 13 and first in time of possession per game with 32:12.

Despite missing last season, Jones was tabbed to his second career preseason honor after being named to CDS 2010 All HBCU Second Team.

His nomination comes as a result of his performance in 2009. In his first season with the Big Blue, Jones finished the season leading the Tigers in tackles with 70 (41 solo). In addition, in tacked on 8.5 tackles for a loss of 18 yards, three pass break-ups, pass deflections, and quarterback hurries apiece, while recovering a fumble and scoring on a safety.

In 2009, he was named to both the All OVC Defense Second Team and Newcomer squad. Jones is the second TSU defender to accomplish the double conference honors in one season behind Eugene Clifford in 2008.

Davis, Edwards and Jones, in their first Phil Steele selection, join Council, Clifford, Sidney Tarver and Joseph Hills, as the only Tigers to be named to highly recognized media outlet's conference list. Currently, Clifford is the only member of TSU Football to be named to magazine's FCS and Conference teams.
