Tigers Continue OVC Play Versus Murray State, at APSU

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tigers are coming off their longest stretch without playing a game on the season, The well-rested Tennessee State squad last played on Saturday as they split their Ohio Valley Conference opener with Eastern Kentucky. A pair of OVC double headers highlights the schedule this weekend, as the Tigers host Murray State on Saturday, before hitting the road for Clarksville to face Austin Peay on Sunday.
 
TSU and the Racers are scheduled for a 1:00pm start, as both games can be seen on the ovcdigitalnetwork.com. The twin bill on Sunday begins at 12:00pm.
 
In 2013, the Tigers saw success in this weekend pairing. On Saturday, TSU split a double dip in Murray before sweeping APSU on Sunday at Tiger Field.
 
TSU, looking for similar success, is led by Lindsey Burgess in average (.353), hits (30), doubles (7) and home runs (4). Freshman Courtney Gearlds (.313) continues to lead the team with 11 hit by pitch and 10 stolen bases.
 
Shea Morris earned a save in the final game with EKU last Saturday and has five on the season. Morris is now the sole leader for saves in the nation.

The Racers boast four hitters .300 or better for a team hitting .278. Cayla Levins is batting .328 and is tied with Jessica Twaddle (.322) with 12 runs scored. Maggie Glass (.303) is tied for the most extra base hits and Mo Ramsey (.300) provides the base-path threat with eight stolen bases in as many attempts. Alexa Becker (.284) leads Murray State in runs (17), home runs (6) and RBI (15). CheyAnne Gaskey (5-7, 4.12), Mason Robinson (4-4, 3.00) and J.J. Francis (2-2, 4.77) have thrown all but one inning for the Racers. Gaskey has been the workhorse with 68 innings in 11 starts and 15 appearances, striking out 60. Robinson has picked up 51.1 innings in nine starts and 14 appearances.

Lauren de Castro is a double threat for APSU. In the circle, de Castro is 7-5 in 13 appearances and 12 starts and worked 64.1 innings with a 3.81 ERA. At the plate, the senior is batting .422 with seven doubles, two home runs, 13 runs scored and has driven in 12. Mel Pavel adds to the offensive attack hitting at a .321 clip and 17 RBI, while Kayla Davidson and Laurel Burroughs pace the Governors with three long balls. Davidson has crossed home plate 13 times and has pushed across 15. Burroughs has scored 14 runs and plated nine.
