Wells’ 18 Kills Pace TSU to 3-0 Victory over Alabama A&M

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tigers returned home Tuesday with a roar knocking off rival Alabama A&M at Kean Hall on Tuesday evening. TSU swept all three sets, 25-16, 25-15, 25-19 to improve to 2-5 on the season as AAMU dropped to 0-11.
 
The Tigers outhit the Bulldogs .371 to .187. Junior Naomi Wells hit at a .615 clip as she delivered 18 kills with just two errors on 26 attempts. Sherryce Butler added 10 kills in 21 attempts for a .381 average.
 
Taylor Patterson entered early in the first set for senior setter Erika Moss who left with an injury. Patterson finished the night with 30 assists, two service aces and added four kills. The play by the freshman setter allowed Moss to sit out the remainder of the evening.
 
After going down 2-0 to start the opening frame the Tigers were able to rally behind a 17-6 run to lead the match 17-8. Naomi Wells paced the tigers racking up seven kills in the set while posting a .700 hitting percentage. TSU would close out the opening fame downing the Bulldogs 25-16 giving them the early 1-0 set lead.
 
The Tigers would continue their momentum into the second set jumping out to an early 15-8 lead. After an Alabama A&M timeout the Bulldogs would cut the TSU lead down to seven at 20-13. Tennessee State would respond with a 5-2 run and win the second set 25-15.
 
Tennessee State would continue their roll into the third set jumping out to a 10-4 run. The Bulldogs would scrap their way back into the set cutting the Tigers lead to 16-14. TSU would respond going on a 5-1 run that would enable the Tigers to cruise to a 25-19 match winning set victory.
 
The Tigers travel to compete at the Charlotte Invitational for their final non-conference tournament of the season. TSU opens play on Friday at 4:30pm against Elon.
