Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State volleyball team will travel to Big10 country for three games at the Hoosier Classic hosted by the University of Indiana in Bloomington. The Tigers (1-2) open play on Friday at 4:00pm CT versus UAB (7-2) and will take on the Hoosiers (5-1) on Saturday at 11:00am. The game can be heard at iuhoosiers.com. TSU closes out the two-day event at 4:00 pm against the University of Wyoming (6-1).
UAB holds a 5-0 series lead over the Tigers, while this weekend will mark the first time Tennessee State takes the court with Indiana and the Cowboys.
The Tigers last played two weeks ago at the Jaguar Classic hosted by South Alabama. TSU was led by senior Erika Moss and juniors Naomi Wells and Sherryce Butler. Moss dished out 117 assists, 10.64 per set, and added 14 kills. Wells led the Tigers with 44 kills, a 4.00 kills per set average, and 32 digs, while Butler hit at a team-high .327 average with 28 kills in 55 attempts.
UAB relies on senior setter Becca Howard to run the offense by averaging 11.52 assists per set. Howard has started all nine matches and has 334 assists. Sam Skinner has been Howard’s top target with 282 attempts. Skinner is converting at a .266 percentage with 116 kills. Defensively, the Blazers average 3.24 blocks per set and are led by middle blockers Kiriana Hirini (1.38) and Sara Rishell (1.52). Hirini has 10 block solos to go along with 30 block assists, while Rishell has seven solos and 37 BA’s.
Indiana is led by a trio who is averaging over 2.5 kills per set. Awele Nwaeze has 57 kills and is hitting at a .400 percentage, Morgan Leach with 55 kills (.333) and Jordan Haverly with 49 kills. Katie Gallagher and Megan Tallman drive the Hoosiers offense. Gallagher has 131 assists, while Tallman has registered 83.
Wyoming’s offense is directed by Courtney Chacon with 215 assists in 21 games for a 10.24 average. Whitney Smith has supplied support to Chacon with 73 assists in eight sets, averaging 9.12 per set. Mikaela Ryshytylo sports a.134 attack percentage with 83 kills in 254 attempts, while Erin Kirby is hitting at a .382 clip with 79 kills. The Cowboys are averaging 3.27 blocks per set, with four separate players averaging at least one per game.
