The Tennessee State University women's basketball
team will make an appearance in the OVC Tournament for the sixth consecutive
year. TSU enters the 2013 tournament as the seventh overall seed. The Lady
Tigers will face sixth seeded SIU Edwardsville on Wednesday, March 6 at 2 p.m.
in the Municipal Auditorium.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State closed out the regular season
with a come-from-behind victory over Eastern Kentucky on "Senior Night". The
Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Colonels, 69-66, in the Gentry Center. With the win the Lady Tigers improved to
13-14 (9-7 OVC) and captured the seventh seed in the OVC Tournament. The win
snapped a five-game skid to Eastern Kentucky and gave TSU its second straight
victory.
The Lady Tigers finished the regular season with a winning record in league play for the first time since posting a 13-5 record in the 2008-09 season.
Tennessee State's three top leading scorers are Kesi Hess (12.8 ppg), Simone Hopes (11.4 ppg) and Jasmin Shuler (10.4 ppg). Hopes also leads the Lady Tigers in rebounding with 7.1 boards per outing.
As a team, TSU is averaging 62.0 points per contest while shooting 36.7 percent from the field and 30.1 percent from beyond the arc. TSU is currently connecting only 68.1 percent from the free-throw line while committing an average of 16.1 turnovers per game.
TSU averages 37.9 rebounds, 10.9 assists and 9.7 steals per game. The Lady Tigers are under first year head coach Larry Joe Inman.
LAST TIME OUT
The Tennessee State University women's basketball
team picked up a hard-fought win over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. TSU
overcame a double-digit deficit and defeated EKU, 69-66, to help six Lady Tiger
seniors notch a victory in their final game in the Gentry Center. Simone Hopes
recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Kesi Hess also
scored 18. Jasmin Shuler finished the game with 15 points while point guard
Rachel Allen nearly recorded a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
TSU vs. SIU EDWARDSVILLE
Tennessee State and SIU Edwardsville will meet
for the fifth time in the series history and the first time in the OVC
Tournament. SIUE holds a 3-1 series advantage. Last month, SIUE claimed the
only regular season meeting between the two teams, 75-69, in the Vadalabene
Center. The Cougars have won two straight vs. the Lady Tigers.
LAST TIME TSU FACED SIUE
After trailing by nearly double-digits late in
the second half, TSU fought back to within two with less than a minute
remaining. The Lady Tigers, however, were not able to complete the comeback.
Jasmin Shuler led TSU with 25 points while Kesi Hess added 21. Jesse Wendt came
off the bench to lead SIUE with 24 points.
LAST TIME IN THE TOURNAMENT
Tennessee State went 1-of-16 from beyond the arc
(6.3 percent) and only connected on 22.7 percent of its shots from the field in
a, 70-55, loss to Eastern Kentucky in the first round of the 2012 OVC
Tournament. Jasmin Shuler managed to scrape together 13 points but she was the
only Lady Tiger to score in double-figures. TSU shot 83.3 percent from the
