The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by remembering one of the finest seasons that a wide receiver has had in Tennessee State football history.
In 1983, Golden Tate received from his teammates the nickname "E.G", which stood for Elmer's Glue. Tate earned the moniker for catching nearly every pass that was thrown his way, usually for a big play.
The Tigers were coming off of a 9-0-1 record and a Black College National Championship in 1982 and it was no secret that the team would like to air the ball out once again the following season. With legendary head coach John Merritt's health failing, TSU relied heavily on its coordinators to run the spread attack. It was an attack that benefitted Tate.
Although the team lost a couple of games, the 1983 season is still memorable as Tate set the school record with 1,307 receiving yards. He also broke the TSU record for catches in a season when he bested Mike Jones' 55 in 1980.
Tate was able to accomplish the feat thanks to a handful of legendary performances including five 100-yard receiving games and two that eclipsed 200 yards. He became the first and only Tiger to tally more than 200 yards in two contests during the same calendar year.
In the season finale on Nov. 19 against North Carolina A&T, Tate had 155 receiving yards and a TSU-record four touchdowns. His stellar play in the game allowed the Tigers to destroy the Bulldogs, 57-0.
Following the conclusion of the 1983 season, Tate was named the team's Most Valuable Player after scoring a team-high 78 points.
Tate's numbers got him noticed on a national level and he was named a Sheridan Poll and Sporting News All-American following his senior season.
Tate's play also got him noticed from professional scouts. In the first year of the Indianapolis Colts' existence in 1984, the team selected Tate with its fifth round pick in the draft.
The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
