Nashville --- Tennessee State University head women's basketball coach Tracee Wells has announced the signing of Donyeah Mayfield.
Mayfield will join the Lady Tigers for the 2011-12 academic year. The 5-11 Guard/Forward averaged a double-double as a senior at Vicksburg High School where she turned in 15.8 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. The two-time Vicksburg post player of the year tallied a total of 347 points and 265 rebounds while averaging 2.5 blocks and 1.7 steals during her senior campaign.
"Donyeah is a tremendous athlete who can play inside and out with a special gift for rebounding," said head coach Tracee Wells. "Her talents caught the eyes of many and led to her being recruited by high major SEC and Big XII schools. I expect Donyeah to make a big impact at TSU and in the OVC over the next four years."
According to MaxPreps.com, Mayfield is ranked among the top 100 players in the state of Mississippi. A native of Vicksburg, Miss., she recorded 15 double-doubles this season and posted season-highs of 29 points and 22 rebounds against Natchez HS. She is a McDonald's All-American game nominee and has also participated in the Mississippi and Alabama All-Star games.
Mayfield, along with fall signee Rachel Allen, will join nine returning letterwinners and two red-shirt freshmen for the 2011-12 season.
"This season the Lady Tigers have high expectations for success," Wells continued. "Our lone senior, Kim Haynes, and the junior class have learned the ropes and are ready to lead us. All-Newcomer team selection, Tayla Foster, will be expected to be a major factor in our success this year, along with a dynamic freshman and sophomore class. We are looking forward to an exciting year, supported by great Tiger fans!"
