NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State cross country program started its season on Friday evening at the Belmont Opener. Both squads took to the 5K course at Percy Warner Park in Nashville as the temperatures reached 91 degrees.

The men finished ninth, while Purdue grabbed the team title. Official results for the women’s race are pending as several protests were filed.

Quamel Prince finished 90 seconds behind top medalist Shadrack Matelong (Middle Tennessee) as he placed 33rd out of 91 runners. The red-shirt sophomore crossed the tape at 16:32.90.

“Quamel (Prince) ran well again for the men,” said Coach Chandra Cheeseborough. “But we need to get everyone to believe in our system. I know we are not known for our distance runners, but we need 100% from both men and women.”

Kwame Robinson and Theo Nicholson crossed the finish line next for the Tigers in 19:47.94 and 20:00.85, respectively. Jalon McCutcheon (22:58.60) completed the course next and was followed by Jakeenen Guthrie (24:24.07), Sean Jenkins (27:16.33), Perry Stokes (28:45.62), and Kenji Anderson (28:54.79).

“We have a lot of work to do,” Cheeseborough said. “We received good performances from freshman Kenyana Hampton, red-shirt Kristen Prior and senior Oteia Prince who set a personal record on this course today. It is a good start for the women, but we still have some work.

Both teams have a week to prepare for the PowerAde Invitational hosted by Chattanooga on Friday, Sept. 5.

“We need to put in more mileage,” Cheeseborough commented. “We did not accomplish the distance this summer and that is what we are lacking. We did interval work this week, so now we are going out on Sunday and getting some mileage.”
