NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State’s Weldon Garlington was named to the 2014 CFPA Punt Returner Award Watch List, as announced by College Football Performance Awards this week.
For his career, Garlington has returned 26 punts for 191 yards and a touchdown. As a freshman, the Antioch, Tenn. native totaled 175 yards on nine run-backs.
The initial watch list includes 34 returning performers, vying for the top punt returner award in the Football Championship Subdivision. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration.
Garlington is the fifth Tiger to be named to the CFPA Watch Lists, joining Anthony Bass, Ronald Butler, Daniel Fitzpatrick and D’Ante Saunders.
The goal of College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferment in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. Twenty-eight CFPA winners have been first-round NFL Draft selections. The CFPA is now in its seventh season of player and team performance recognition.
The full list of 2014 CFPA winners will be announced January 14, 2015.
