MOREHEAD, Ky. – Tennessee State scored early, but could not hold on, as they fell in the final game at Morehead State on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles completed the sweep of the Tigers with a 3-2 victory. TSU falls to 16-37, 4-19 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while MSU improved to 13-31-1, 9-13 in conference.
Kiarra Freeman received a leadoff walk and used her speed to get the Tigers on the board first. Freeman would pick up back-to-back steals and advanced home as the attempt to throw her out at third sailed into left field.
TSU tacked on another run as Rebekka Gross and Jayna Hanawahine hit consecutive two-out doubles to take the early 2-0 lead.
MSU used a pair of doubles in the second off starter Hannah St. Clair to close to within one at 2-1. An inning later, the Eagles pieced together three hits and a sacrifice fly to score two runs and take a 3-2 lead.
The Tigers would threaten in the fourth with consecutive hits by Lindsey Burgess and Shimizu. Two batters later, St. Clair earned a walk to load the bases. MSU would make a pitching change, and like the day before, the new Eagle pitcher would go on to retire 10 consecutive batters.
St. Clair (3-12) took the loss, working three innings and was touched for three runs on six hits and a walk. The freshman would strike out one Eagle. Olivia Gamache relieved St. Clair, tossing two innings, surrendering two hits, while fanning one. Shea Morris worked the final inning and needed just 10 pitches to strike out the three batters she faced.
The Tigers will close out the season with a three game series at cross-town rival Belmont. The series will begin with a single game on Saturday and a twin bill on Sunday.
