MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Day two of the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference began under wet conditions. It started raining in northern Alabama overnight and continued for the first seven holes of play. The day continued to be overcast with the highs reaching75 at the Par-72, 6,203 yard Fighting Joe course at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals.
Despite the conditions, Tennessee State (359-357=716) was able to cut two strokes from Monday’s round. The Tigers remain in tenth as they head into the final round.
Kelly Merkel (91-82=173) scored 10 pars and a birdie to end the round, as she cut nine strokes from her day one total. The sophomore finished with a team low, 10-over, as she hit 10-of-14 fairways and nine greens. On the par-3, 18th, Merkel used a 6-iron off the box from 156 yards, landing seven feet above the flag. Merkel was able to convert on a down-to-up putt for the birdie.
Natalie Spicer (95-90=185) was able to drop five strokes from her first round with five pars and two birdies. Spicer picked up her first 1-under on the par-3, 5th, with a 20-foot putt. On the par-4, 11th, the freshman hit a hybrid onto the green from 170-yards out, leaving her 30 feet to the pin. Spicer was able to drain the lengthy uphill putt to convert for birdie. The Springfield, Tenn., product was strong off the box on Tuesday, hitting 12-of-14 fairways and seven greens.
Laura Bremer (98-91=189) was one of three Tigers who cut strokes from day one. Bremer used six pars, six fairways, eight greens and just over two putts per hole on Tuesday.
Sarah Needleman (83-94=177) carded one birdie and four pars during the second 18. On the par-4, 4th, Needleman used a 7-iron from 133-yards to knock it 10 feet from the hole to set up her lone 1-under. The sophomore hit 10 fairways and five greens, as she used 36 putts on the day.
Amelia Dap (90-96=186) opened the day with two bogey’s before reaching the par-4, 3rd. Dap knocked her second shot onto the green with a 3-wood from 150 out. The sophomore used two putts, for the first of back-to-back pars. Dap finished the first round at 7-over, but found trouble on the back nine to finish the day at 24-over. Dap hit seven fairways and seven greens during round two.
The final round begins at 8:00am on Wednesday morning. Laura Bremer will be in the first group to take to the course. Amelia Dap will head out at 8:10am, Natalie Spicer at 8:20am, Sarah Needleman at 8:30am and Kelly Merkel tees off at 8:40am.
