BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Tennessee State women’s golf team concluded play with the final round 1st Annual Western Kentucky Lady Topper Classic on Tuesday. The Tigers shot a 60-over, 348 on the par-72, 6,027 yard, Bowling Green Country Club as the day reached the upper 70’s.
The host, WKU, claimed the title as the Tigers finished eighth. The Hilltoppers Ellinor Haag finished as the individual medalist with a 6-over, 222.
Sarah Needleman and Natalie Spicer recorded the low score for the day with a 12-over, 84. Needleman, playing as an individual, continued her strong ball-striking as she equaled her first round score, hitting 12-of-14 fairways and seven greens. The sophomore recorded birdies on the par-4, 15th and the par-5, 18th. Needleman hit a 7-iron from 130-yards out to within five feet to set up the birdie on 18 and converted on a 12 foot putt on 15.
Spicer (86-79-84=249) started the day off with a solid round by recording seven pars and sat at 3-over through the first 10 holes. Spicer hit a rough stretch of six holes where she lost nine strokes, before finishing with two pars. The freshman hit 11-of-14 fairways and six greens as she averaged less than two putts per hole.
Laura Bremer (104-90-87=281) cut strokes off her previous 18 for the second consecutive round and posted a scoring 87. Bremer carded four pars and two birdies on five up-and-downs, four fairways, three greens and 30 putts. The sophomore-transfer used a couple knock-down wedge shots to accomplish her 1-under’s. The shots set up a 10-footer on the par-5, 2nd and a seven-footer on the par-5, 5th.
Kelly Merkel (90-86-87=263) matched Bremer’s score for the round by hitting nine fairways and five greens. On the par-5, 18th, Merkel found herself behind a grouping of trees off the box, but was able to find a gap placing her 130-yards out. The Columbia native stuck her third shot three feet from the cup to set up a short putt for the birdie.
Erica Edwards (77-83-90=250) carded the final countable score for the Tigers on Tuesday as she registered four pars, three fairways and used 29 putts. Amelia Dap (93-88-93=274) shot a non-countable 93 as she carded three pars.
The Tigers will close out the season at the Ohio Valley Conference held in Muscle Shoals, Ala., on Apr. 21-23.
