BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Tennessee State women’s golf team completed 36-holes on day one of the 1st Annual Western Kentucky Lady Topper Classic. The Tigers currently sit in eighth place with a 106-over, 682 on the par-72, 6,027 yard, Bowling Green Country Club. Play was delayed at the start due to frost, but the day produced good playing conditions as temperatures reached the low 70’s. The host Hilltoppers posted a 32-over, 608 to hold the lead heading into the final round.

Erica Edwards got off to a slow start with a bogey on 10, a double bogey on 11 and a bogey on 12 to open the day at 4-over. The freshman shook off the rough beginning by shooting a 1-under over the next seven holes, including a birdie on the par-5, 14th. Edwards would finish the first 18-holes with a 5-over, 77, while adding birdies on No. 6 and No. 8, both par-4’s. Her efforts in the morning round had her tied for fourth in the 52-player field.

Edwards made the turn back to ten to begin the second round and opened with a par and a birdie to move to 4-over on the day. The Murfreesboro native would run into trouble as she finished the second round with an 11-over, 83. Edwards finished the day tied for 13th with a 16-over, 160.

Natalie Spicer traded roles with Edwards on the day as she could only manage three pars and a birdie to shoot a 14-over, 86. The freshman started round two with four consecutive pars, but found herself at 6-over with four holes to play. Spicer notched birdies on back-to-back holes before giving the strokes on the final two holes of the day to shoot a team low 7-over, 79.

Kelly Merkel (90-86=176) entered the clubhouse at 32-over as she scored 12 pars on the day and scored for the Tigers in both rounds. Amelia Dap (93-88=181) also scored for TSU in both rounds as she drained a birdie in each round. On the par-3, 7th, during the afternoon session, Dap found herself just off the green and 31-feet from the pin. The Murfreesboro product would putt from the fringe and covered ten feet before she reached the green. The putt continued its trek above the hole and started to fall from left to right as the ball had just enough to find the bottom of the cup.

Laura Bremer (104-90=194) dropped one birdie and eight pars on the day, seven during the second round. The sophomore-transfer struggled during the first 18, but rebounded to cut 14 strokes off her first round score.

Playing as an individual, Sarah Needleman (84-91=175) finished one over her career best as she used nine pars, 11 fairways and six greens to shoot a 12-over, 84. Needleman would once again hit 11-of-14 fairways in the second round, but could only manage four pars as she fell off the pace in the afternoon.

The Tigers will play the final 18-holes on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8:00am.
