SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – The men’s golf team cut eight strokes from the first round of play at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate hosted by Tennessee Tech. Tennessee State shot a 15-over, 303 over the second 18-holes of the day, after shooting 311 during the first round. The University of Tennessee leads the field with a -11 under, 565.

The two-day, 54-hole event took place at the par-72, 6,884 yard, Sevierville Golf Club. Day one was played under overcast skies with drizzle at times, as the temperatures hovered around 45 degrees.

Matt Campbell (78-75=153) hit 25 of 28 fairways to set up four birdies, one in the first – three in the second, through the first 36-holes. Campbell carded birdies during the second round on the par-4, 2nd and on a pair of par-3’s, No. 9 and No. 13.

James Stepp (79-74=153) stayed consistent most of the day as he notched 11 pars in round one and 16 in the second.

Andrew Warner (77-78=155) dropped a five-foot putt for birdie during the first round on No. 7 after striking a wedge from 95-yards out. On the par-3, 2nd, during the second round, Warner used an up-and-down from behind the green to save par.

Blake Burgett (77-79=156) highlighted the day in round two on the par-5, 10th. The transfer scored an up-and-down from 50-yards out to set up the easy putt.

Codie Welborn (86-76=162) struggles through the first 18 holes, but was still able to find 10 of 14 fairways during the first round. The senior came back to hit 13 of 14 fairways and shoot a 4-over, 76, for the second round. On 10, Welborn used a knockdown, gap wedge from 108-yards out to within 12 feet. Welborn was able to sink the 12-footer for his lone birdie of the day. The Murfreesboro native was able to save par on the par-3, 9th after landing short in the bunker. A sand save to a foot of the hole set up Welborn to break even on the hole.

The final round for the Tigers will begin at 10:00am on Tuesday morning.
