The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will play its first home game of the season when the Lady Tigers host the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi Thursday night in the Gentry Center. Game time for the non-conference match-up is slated for 6 p.m.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State is coming off a disappointing road loss to Florida A&M on Sunday. The Lady Tigers fell to the Rattlers, 66-49, in the Al Lawson Center.
After three games, TSU is averaging 61.8 points per outing while shooting 34.3 percent from the field. Chelsea Hudson leads the team in scoring with 18.0 points per game while I’mani Davis (8.3 ppg) and Rachel Allen (7.8 ppg) round out the top three scorers for TSU.
The Lady Tigers, under second year head coach Larry Joe Inman, returned four letterwinners from last year’s squad and added eight newcomers, including seven freshmen, to the roster.
TSU finished last season with an overall record of 13-15 and a 9-7 conference mark. In an Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll that was released in October, TSU was predicted to finish fifth in the East Division standings.
LAST TIME OUT
Tennessee State picked up its first win of the season after knocking off Troy, 77-71, on the road. The Lady Tigers used a 15-3 run down the stretch to pull away from the Trojans. Chelsea Hudson recorded her second consecutive double-double with a 13 points and 13 rebounds while I’mani Davis also notched a double-double with a game-high 15 points to go with 11 boards. Alana Morris came off the bench to score 12 points and Rachel Allen chipped in 10. TSU shot 41.4 percent from the field, including 40.0 percent from three-point range.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Texas A&M Corpus Christi (2-2) is coming off a, 72-62, win at OVC member Belmont on Tuesday night.
In the win over BU, three players scored in double-digits led by Jasmine Shaw’s 17 points. Brittany Mbamalu (14) and Alissa Campanero (12) also posted double figures while Ashley Darley grabbed 10 rebounds.
Following four contests, TAMCC is averaging 65.0 points per game behind a 37.0 field goal percentage. The Islanders are 30-of-76 (.395) from three-point range.
Shaw (20.5 ppg), Gregory (8.3 ppg) and Darley (7.5 ppg) lead the Islanders in scoring.
TSU vs. TEXAS A&M CORPUS CHRISTI
Tennessee State and Texas A&M Corpus Christi will meet for only the second time in the program’s history. TAMCC holds a 1-0 series advantage. In the only meeting between the two teams, the Islanders defeated the Lady Tigers, 78-63, on Dec. 1, 2000.
