Leonard and Evans Honored by CFPA

Nashville, Tenn. – Junior tight end A.C. Leonard and junior defensive tackle Samquan Evans were both honored by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) following TSU’s, 41-21, victory at Tennessee Tech last weekend.

Leonard was named National Tight End of the Week for the FCS, while Evans was an honorable mention for the Defensive Lineman Performer of the Week.

Leonard caught a season-high five passes for a career-high 122 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Leonard’s two scores both occurred in the second half and helped the Tigers run away with their first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season.

The Jacksonville, Fla. native now has a team-high 16 catches for 219 yards and an average of 13.7 yards per grab. His two touchdowns at Cookeville were the first of his 2013 campaign.

Evans, led the Tennessee State defense as the Tigers became the first OVC team to improve to 1-0 in conference play. The junior had a career-high eight tackles, including 2.5 tackles-for-loss (for 18 yards), 1.5 sacks (for 10 yards) and a forced fumble.

The product of Walkertown, N.C. is now second on the team in tackles for Big Blue with 20. His two sacks only trail Anthony Bass for the team lead.

TSU will go for win number four on Saturday when the squad takes on Central State in the St. Louis Gateway Classic at 2 p.m.
