Jackson, Tenn. - The men's golf team played a man down on the final day of the UT Martin Grover Page Classic. The Tigers were without senior Cameron Scitern who was not able to complete the course. The Tigers held on to finish ninth in the two-day, 54-hole tournament at the Par-72, 6, 783 yard Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn.
Scitern (76-72-WD=148) could only manage six holes of play before having to withdraw due to illness. The senior had worked his way up to 11th after two rounds of play.
With Scitern out, the Tigers needed the four remaining members to step up. James Stepp (78-75-75=228) shot his second consecutive round of 3-over. The 75 in the final round gave Stepp a 12-over, 228 for the tournament. The final 18 performance moved Stepp up four spots to finish 21st.
Stepp used birdies on the par-4 fourth and the par eighth to go along with 11 pars to solidify his round. The sophomore led the tournament with 37 pars.
Andrew Warner (78-79-76=233) shot his best round of the two day event with a 4-over 76. Warner scored a birdie on the par-4 first and knocked down 14 pars, including 11 of the final 12 holes. The junior finished play tied for 32nd, moving up seven spots.
Matt Campbell (85-77-82=244) and Shane Sampair (81-83-86=250) were the final two countable scores for TSU. The duo struggled in the final round with Campbell shooting a 10-over 76, while Sampair entered the clubhouse with a 14-over 86.
Campbell managed one birdie, the par-4 14th, to go along with eight pars. Sampair, like Warner, birdied the first hole, as well as the par-5 fifth. Sampair recorded a birdie on the fifth in all three rounds. The sophomore-transfer added six pars to complete his final round of 18.
The Tigers will return to action in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., for the Tennessee Tech Invitational March 17-19.
