NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State broke a 12-game losing streak in the opening game of their Ohio Valley Conference series at cross-town rival, Belmont. The Tigers earned a 4-1 victory to improve to 17-37, 5-19 in conference play. The loss extended the Bruins losing streak to 10 games, as they fall to 12-35, 6-18 in the OVC.
TSU tallied 11 hits on the day, while the pitching duo of Olivia Gamache and Shea Morris held Belmont to three hits.
For the Tigers, Kiarra Freeman, Lindsey Burgess, Kate Morris and Rebekka Gross all finished the game 2-for-4. Courtney Gearlds, Jayna Hanawahine and Ashley Haynes all added a hit a piece.
Freeman reached, and advanced to second, on an error with one out in the third to give TSU their first scoring opportunity. Two batters later, Kate Morris added to her team high RBI count with a single through the right side of the infield, plating Freeman to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.
The Tigers added to their advantage in the fifth with three runs off three hits. Burgess picked up her ninth double of the season with a shot to right center, chasing Gearlds home from second and Freeman from first. On the play, Burgess took advantage of a bobbled relay throw and took third base.
Kate Morris followed with a ground out to third, allowing Burgess to score to take a 4-0 lead. The RBI for Morris was her second of the game, 25th of the season.
Gamache worked the first two innings facing the minimum, six, batters. Shea Morris worked two innings, surrendering two hits and a walk, while fanning two. The time worked gave Morris the win, as she improved to 10-13 on the season.
Gamache returned in the fifth inning and was tagged for the lone run the Bruins would score. BU used two errors and a passed ball to register their unearned run. Gamache tossed the final three innings, recording her first save of the season, second of her career.
On the evening, Gamache allowed one hit, hit two batters and walked two. The senior hurler struck out four batters.
The two teams will conclude the series with a double header at Rose Park on Sunday. Game time for the first contest is set for 2:00pm. The twin bill can be seen on ovcdigitalnetwork.com.
