THIS WEEKEND’S GAMES

The Tennessee State men’s basketball team will go on its final road trip of the season this weekend when the squad travels to Morehead State on Thursday and Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. Tip-off for the game against the Eagles is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. while the Tigers will meet the Colonels at 7 p.m.

TIGERS AT A GLANCE

Tennessee State is coming off of a, 66-61, win against SIUE on Thursday raising the Tigers to 4-24 overall and 3-11 in league play.

TSU is averaging 68.8 points per game while shooting 42.7 percent from the field. Senior Patrick Miller has been the team’s top scorer all season long and is leading the OVC in points per game (23.2). M.J. Rhett has also been a top contributor, pouring in 10.8 points and securing 9.3 boards each outing.

The Tigers, led by second year head coach Travis Williams, returned five letter winners from last year’s 18-15 squad. However, the club lost four starters due to graduation last year, but the three big missing pieces are All-OVC second team members Robert Covington and Kellen Thornton as well as Jordan Cyphers. Last season, that trio of players averaged 43 points per contest which was 60 percent of the team’s scoring.

LAST TIME OUT

Neither the weather nor SIUE could stop Tennessee State from sending off its seniors with a, 66-61, victory on Thursday night in the Gentry Center.

In a game that was delayed for 30 minutes at halftime because of a tornado warning, senior Miller led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting. The contest marked the 40th straight game that the Chicago native has scored at least 10 points.

Fellow senior Chaed Wellian had a career-night, pouring in a new personal best 12 points and junior Rhett had his 14th double-double of the season, notching 16 points and 11 rebounds.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

Morehead State comes into Thursday’s matchup after seeing its five-game winning streak halted in a 69-58 loss to Murray State.

Morehead State junior Angelo Warner notched a team-high 18 points for his 55th career double-figure effort and 26th this season.  Senior Chad Posthumus, who ranks second in the nation in rebounds per game, corralled a team-best nine.  He also added 14 points, hitting 7-of-9 from the floor, for his 17th double-figure contest this year.

Eastern Kentucky made 17 three-pointers on its way to a 96-75 victory at Austin Peay on Saturday. The Colonels had lost eight straight in Clarksville, not winning on the Governors' home court since 2005.

Glenn Cosey knocked down eight of Eastern's three-pointers and finished with a game-best 27 points to go along with nine assists and one steal. Fellow senior Tarius Johnson made four 3-pointers and finished with a new career-high 24 points.

Cosey is fourth in the OVC, averaging 19 points per game.

SERIES HISTORY

Tennessee State will square off against Morehead State for the 61st time, and the Tigers are 27-33 against the Eagles all-time.

The TSU/EKU game is the 53rd meeting, with the Colonels holding a 24-28 edge.

LAST TIME WE MET

It took overtime, but the Tennessee State men’s basketball team dropped its 21st game of the season, 80-74, at home versus Morehead State on Jan. 25.

Miller scored a game-high 36 points and made 12 of his 24 attempts for his sixth straight 20-plus performance dating back to Jan. 7 and his second straight 30-point game.

The Tennessee State men’s basketball team fell to Eastern Kentucky 94-78 on Jan. 23 in the Gentry Center.

Miller finished with 33 points on 12-of-19 shooting (63 percent), and a team-best six rebounds and four assists.

Jordan Gaither was the only other Tennessee State (2-20, 1-7) player in double figures as the sophomore finished with a career-high 20 points and was 7-for-9 from the field (77 percent) while playing 16 minutes, all in the second half.
