NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference released the Preseason Poll for women’s golf on Thursday. Tennessee State was selected to finish 10th by the conference head coaches after recording the same finish in 2013.
Morehead State received seven first place votes to claim the top spot and was followed by Jacksonville State who topped two ballots. Murray State garnered the last first place vote to finish third ahead of defending champions, Eastern Kentucky. Belmont was tabbed fifth, edging out Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech who tied for sixth. SIUE, Eastern Illinois and the Tigers rounded out the selections.
The very young Tigers boast a roster of four sophomores and two freshmen. Kelly Merkel, Amelia Dap, and Sarah Needleman return and are joined by junior college transfer, Laura Bremer, and rookies Erica Edwards and Natalie Spicer.
During the fall season, the women opened play by recording the best round in school history. Edwards, Merkel, Spicer and Needleman teamed up to card a 335. The Tigers then closed out the fall the same as they started by breaking the record again. Dap joined Merkel, Spicer and Needleman to set the new standard.
