Moss Posts Her 13th Double-Double of the Year in 3-0 Loss to Morehead State

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Erika Moss has been then leader of the Tennessee State volleyball program for the last four years. Thursday night Moss left her heart on the floor posting her 13th double-double of the season in a 3-0 loss to No. 1 seed Morehead State.

The senior dished out 22 assists to go along with 14 digs in the match. Moss also recorded 5 kills and four blocks in a gritty effort to jumpstart the Tigers.

Freshman Arijana Anderson continued her stellar season posting 12 kills, her 15th double-digit kill performance and her third straight to close out the year.

Morehead State (25-7, 15-1) got out to a quick start in the first set taking the early 4-1 advantage. Tennessee State (10-18, 6-10) responded with a 3-0 run capped by a Naomi Wells kill to knot the set at 4-4. The Eagles pushed the lead out to seven at 17-10.

 TSU closed to within four, 19-15, after a Taylor Swayzer ace split the Eagles backline. Both clubs traded points from there and the clipped the MSU lead to four on three more occasions, with the last  coming at 22-18. Morehead State went on to close out the first set 25-19, and take a 1-0 set advantage.

Senior setter Erika Moss finished the first frame with two kills hitting .667 from the floor with two assists.

Tennessee State got out of the gates fast in the second frame with a 3-0 run to start. The run included back-to-back kills from Arijana Anderson and Wells. TSU extended its lead out to 8-2 forcing Morehead State to use a timeout.

The stoppage allowed the eagles to regroup and close within three, 8-5. Big Blue pushed back, increasing its lead back to five, 11-6, after a junior Sherryce Butler kill.

Coach Kathy Roulhac’s team pushed its lead out to seven following an Anderson kill to make the score 17-10. Morehad used an 8-2 run to take its first lead of the set 20-19 capped by a Courtney Smith ace.

The Eagles lead would grow to three, 24-21, sitting just one point away from taking the set. A kill from Anderson followed by an attack error from the hosts closed the gap to one point, 24-23. Morehead’s Hannah Sigala followed the sequence with a kill of her own to end the set, 25-23, sending the No. 1 seed to the locker room up 2-0.

In the set Anderson tallied eight kills to lead the Tigers charge.

Morehead State broke out to an 9-3 advantage out of the locker room behind five kills. The No. 8 seeded Tigers used a 3-1 run capped by a Butler kill to cut the lead to four, 10-6.

 The hosts pushed their lead out to eight, 17-9. Tennessee State closed attempted to chip into the lead but the hosts responded each time and took the set 25-14 as well as the match 3-0.

Sophomore Courtney Smith led the Eagles in kills with 11 on the evening.

Tennessee State will return home and its offseason and Morehead State advances to play No. 5 seed Austin Peay on Friday.
