NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On Saturday, the Tennessee State men’s basketball team will go for its first win of the season when the squad travels to Wichita State for a matchup with the Shockers.

This past weekend, the Tigers played three contests in Honolulu for the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic and fell to Hawai’i, New Mexico State and Western Michigan.

TSU was led by senior Patrick Miller who was the Tigers’ leading scorer, pouring in 62 points for an average of 20.7 points during the three games. He made 24 of his 60 attempts (40 percent) from the field and held a 4-for-13 (30.8 percent) line from behind the three-point line.

Miller has scored 38 percent of the team’s 162 points this season.

The Tigers should focus on getting in the pain against the Shockers as they are shooting 43 percent from inside of the arc. From three, the team has hit 7-of-45 shots for a 15 percent conversion rate.

Another key player for TSU this year has been M.J. Rhett who recorded a double-double against Hawai’i (11 points and 12 rebounds) and narrowly missed his second versus Western Michigan (10 points and nine boards).

Rhett is averaging nine points and 8.3 rebounds in TSU’s first three contests and has 33 percent of boards brought in by the Tigers.

Tennessee State will face its biggest test of the young campaign when the team takes on Wichita State (2-0) which made the Final Four last season.

The Shockers have outscored Emporia State and Western Kentucky, 158-99, and boast three players who average in double figures in Cleanthony Early (16), Fred Van Vleet (14.5) and Ron Baker (10).

WSU has made 50 percent of its shots, is forcing 20 turnovers and blocking nine shots per game.

The last time that TSU has faced a defending Final Four team was in 1998-99 when the Tigers played Kentucky; TSU lost that game, 97-47. Tennessee State has never met Wichita State.

The Tigers and Shockers will tipoff at noon on Saturday, Nov. 16 in the Charles Koch Arena.
