NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After sweeping both OVC matches last week, Tennessee State volleyball begins its longest conference road swing of the year.

The Tigers begin the road trip with a matchup against Austin Peay (9-17, 6-4) tonight.

TSU (9-12, 5-5) has had recent success in OVC play, winning three of the last four contests. The Tigers completed a perfect week on Friday when they knocked off Jacksonville State in straight sets, after beating Tennessee Tech 3-0 earlier in the week.

Last week, junior Naomi Wells continued her stellar season posting 26 kills in the two contests, including 15 against Jacksonville State. Defensively Wells shined as well with 20 digs, highlighted by a 13 dig performance on Friday.

Wells effort earned her the OVC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honor for the second time this season.

Junior Zoe Sostre emerged against Jacksonville State, proving to be a dominant force on the attack and the block. The Carolina, Puerto Rico native registered career highs in kills (8) and blocks (4) in the win.

Over the week the block posted 17 total blocks an average of 2.8 blocks per set.

Today, the Tigers turn their attention to Austin Peay. Although the Governors struggled in their out of conference slate, limping to a 3-13 record in non-conference matches, they have excelled to a 6-4 record in OVC play. Their record has them sitting in second place in the OVC’s western division, just a game behind Eastern Illinois.

In conference play the Lady Govs have turned things around, ranking second in both blocks (2.41) and kills (13.88) per set among conference teams in OVC play.

Although, Austin Peay has had great success in the early part of OVC play, they enter Tuesday on a two-match losing skid. The Lady Govs dropped a pair of matches at home to SIU Edwardsville (0-3) and Eastern Illinois (1-3) over the weekend. Peay had entered the weekend first in the OVC’s western division but by weekend’s end they ranked second.

Tonight’s matchup will feature two of the best attackers in the conference. Wells leads the conference in kills per frame with 3.75, followed closely behind is APSU junior with an average of 3.66. The pair also holds the same top spots in points per set as well.

Defensively the Lady Govs will look to Lauren Henderson on the block. The senior is averaging 0.88 blocks per frame which is the seventh best average in the OVC.

First serve for today’s contest is set for 7 p.m.
